Samsung announces the new Galaxy S22 series – building on strong foundations from its predecessor

Samsung has just announced their latest flagships of 2022 – the Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra. These devices use the latest 4nm chips which are marginally faster than their predecessors.

With the Note lineup being discontinued last year, the Galaxy S22 Ultra now comes with a built-in S Pen to fill productivity needs.

Breaking screen brightness records – again

Akin to the earlier Galaxy S21 Ultra which was the brightest phone display at 1500 nits, the latest Galaxy S22 Ultra breaks its predecessor’s record with a peak brightness of 1750 nits. The bump in brightness will allow users to use their phones under harsh sunlight.

More paper-like than ever

Coming from a 9.8ms response time on the Note 20 Ultra, which many already find impressive, the Galaxy S22 Ultra utilises AI to predict the direction of the pen according to the position of the pen.

At just 2.8ms response time when using the S Pen on the Galaxy S22 Ultra, it might be a favoured tool for digital artists on the go – partly attributed to the relatively large display and high refresh rates.

Further away from obsolescence

Planned obsolescence – whether fact or fiction, have been a known qualm of Android devices, with most devices averaging around 2 years of Android updates and security patches.

With the Galaxy S22 series, the company has promised 4 years of updates to it’s software, potentially bringing users to Android 16, from the current Android 12. Users can expect more updates and added features without necessarily getting the latest flagship.

Doing away with the massive camera bump

Rather than having a combined camera bump like on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the new Galaxy S22 Ultra will have individual camera modules on its back.

Apart from the aesthetics viewpoint, it might mean that phone cases can now fit better on the new design.

“Routines” camera upgrades

While the previous Ultra iteration won the hearts of it’s users through it’s high megapixel counts, the S22 Ultra now adds a handful of automated features such as Auto FPS and Auto Framing.

The former will optimise the best frame rate of the footage based on the ambient lighting conditions. The latter will automatically adjust the zoom level and camera angle based on the number and positions of objects in frame.

On the topic of filming, the device now comes with a 58% larger OIS module, increasing footage stability of both moving objects and vibrating hands while filming.

Even though the S22 Ultra still comes with a main 108MP lens, each pixel is now about 1.23 times larger, improving the level of detail and colour accuracy, even with the iconic 30x Zoom from last year’s model.

45W fast charging on the S22 Ultra

Taking in feedback about the 25W charging wattage on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will now support a faster 45W charging standard.

You would, however, be required to purchase the fast charging bundle (wire and adapter) to take advantage of the faster charging speeds on all 3 devices.

Battery conservation with the same capacity

Improving on last year’s adaptive refresh rate technology, the display can now tone down the screen refresh rate to 1Hz – down from 10Hz in the S21 Ultra.

With such low refresh rate, the display essentially remains idle when displaying static images. Minor, but noticeable improvements also include automatically disabling WiFi when not in use to reduce power draw.
