With increased sophistication in content production across multiple areas, the EOS R6 Mark II aims to succeed the EOS R6 – for content creators seeking video and photography capabilities in a compact mirrorless camera body.
The camera is complemented with two accessories: the RF135mm f/1.8L IS USM lens and Speedlite EL-5 camera flash attachment.
The said camera marks several firsts in Canon’s product innovation
- support focus breathing correction, reducing unwanted angular changes of view during focus transitions.
- going beyond 30 fps in AF/AE-tracked continuous still shooting capabilities
Its newly developed 24.2-megapixel full-frame image sensor possesses the ability to surpass the 30.4-megapixel EOS 5D Mark IV – with native ISO speeds peaking at 102,400. A Digital teleconverter doubles or quadruples the focal length through a button, to accommodate unexpected telephoto shooting moments without the need to change lenses.
Professional Video Workflows at top priority
Recording at 6K RAW externally via HDMI, the device is also capable of high-quality 4K 60p video oversampled from 6K, and High Frame Rate video up to Full HD 180p. Having an alternative Quick Control screen mimics the intuitive interface found on Cinema EOS systems for usage familiarity.
In addition to Canon Log 3 and HDR PQ video, extended video recording sessions (at 4k 30p) are now made possible with improved heat management. Reinforcing the previous feature, Full HD proxy data can simultaneously be recorded to one of the two SD card slots for ease of editing (and potentially for longer recording hours).
To maximise its longevity during projects, pairing the camera with the LP-E6NH battery shoots up to 760 shots on a single charge.
Unique Cinema EOS functions
Just like other Cinema EOS cameras, the EOS R6 Mark II allows users to capture moments up to 5 seconds before pressing the record button. It also features the Hybrid Auto Mode that records a video 2-4 seconds during still image shooting for a slew of uses.
Atop of the mainstream zebra display, this device is now equipped with the false colour function widely used in the Cinema EOS system, aiding with exposure adjustments in tricky conditions.
Greater connectivity and Livestreaming capabilities
With UVC (USB Video Class) and UAC (USB Audio Class) protocols, Full HD 30p video and audio can be delivered to a Windows/Mac OS computer in real-time – a huge upgrade from any current camera hardware for livestreams and video conferences. Users can take advantage of a full-frame camera and high-quality lenses, in a plug-and-play format.
Now supporting both 5GHz and 2.4GHz wireless connections, smartphone connectivity now supports automatic data transfer and shutter release, which are now also possible via a wired USB connection or the Camera Connect app. Data transfer to FTP servers is also supported via either method.
AI Detection and Tracking Capabilities
Through deep learning-based algorithms, subject tracking performance now extends to animals, vehicles, and other subjects of the choice – for both stills and videos. This function can now maintain consistent tracking even with changes in posture, orientation, or ambient brightness.
Users can also specify right or left eye priority for Eye Detection AF in photo or video mode. The new “Auto subject detection” mode automatically detects more than one type of subject within the same frame – according to the user’s choice.
Its purpose extends to its AI Focus AF mode – switching between One-Shot AF and Servo AF modes to react to subjects with movement changes. To overcome the qualms of creating HDR merges of moving subjects, In-Body IS and HDR PQ HEIF recording now includes “Moving subject priority” to achieve the same effect with a single shot.
Compliments its RF135mm f/1.8L IS USM lens
Already supporting built-in OIS with up to 5.5 stops, Canon’s first professional 135mm prime lens for the RF mount achieves up to 8 stops of image stabilisation via Coordinated Control IS.
While weighing about 935g – lighter than competing lenses without OIS, the lens boasts an enlarged f/1.8 aperture for beautiful, defined bokeh and faster shutter speeds in challenging lighting conditions.
Improving content creation with a flash: Speedlite EL-5
Using the new 15-pin Multi-Function Shoe on selected EOS R cameras produces faster and more reliable communications, with wireless control capabilities via a smartphone.
Improved efficiency allows the recycling time to be shortened to approximately 0.1 to 1.2 seconds6 and can emit continuous flashes approximately 95 times or more7 at full output (GN 608). Situations that require fine lighting control can take advantage of the Micro flash – going as low as 1/1024.
