The Canon RF16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM improves portability and pricing for amateur creators

Engineered around the EOS R mirrorless system, the RF16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM is Canon’s second non-professional-grade constant aperture zoom lens. Alongside the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM standard zoom lens, this accessory aims to be a more portable iteration for amateur creators.

Versatile Ultra-Wide Angle Zoom Lens

Riding on the trend of wide-angle footage which offers framing flexibility, the RF16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM will be the first of its class to deliver beautiful bokeh (f/2.8 aperture, 16mm or 28mm) and low light shots on a reduced budget – akin to its professional counterparts.

The accessory doubles as a standard zoom lens with constant aperture when paired with APS-C cameras, producing a full-frame equivalent focal range of 25.6mm to 44.8mm – suited for landscape shots.

Centred around handheld portability

At around 9.1cm long when fully retracted, the RF16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM weighs about 445g. When fitted onto a gimbal, the setup would be ideal for travel, hikes, and exploration. To support this usage scenario, the accessory has dust-and-drip resistance, equivalent to that of professional-grade L-series lenses.

When paired with compatible cameras, such as the EOS R6 Mark II, the lens’ built-in optical image stabiliser (OIS) supports peripheral coordinated control to reduce resulting edge blur that occurs in shooting stills with wide-angle lenses.

Availability and Pricing

The RF16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM will be available at Canon authorised dealers in February 2025. Pricing will be advised at a later date.
