In this release, Canon unveils two camera models – the EOS R50 V and the PowerShot V1. Through this release, the company aims to provide lightweight users with a glimpse of the standards from cinema-grade equipment – sharing features commonly found in cinema-class equipment.
To complement the camera features, Canon introduces the RF-S14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ – a compact lens which works seamlessly with the EOS R50 V.
EOS R50V
The Canon EOS R50V is Canon’s first camera to integrate a couple of Cinema EOS features that are found in the EOS R1 – a benchmark in the professional videography industry. The said device supports Custom Pictures and LUTs – two industry-standard HDR video recording modes, alongside XF-HEVC S / XF-AVC S recording formats, and professional display aids such as false colours.
Designed for fast-paced videography, the new Slow & Fast Motion movies mode can create Full HD and 4K slow motion movies – slowing time down by up to 1/5x and 1/2.5x speed respectively. For fast video reproduction, the camera is capable of producing 4K time lapse videos that speed up motion by up to 60x. The audio-recording capabilities adds to the cinematic expression provided by the slo-mo capture.
The 3-mic noise reduction technology is a huge highlight for prospective users looking to record crowded events. The setup detects and reduces unwanted noise, while supporting LPCM 24-bit 4-channel audio input – simplifying post-processing workflow for projects with multiple audio sources, namely interviews, outdoor takes with dialogue, and concerts.
Users shooting stills and video in crowded scenes such as events, concerts, and sports will benefit from the Register People Priority mode. Usually, found in more advanced camera models, the mode prioritises pre-registered individuals for detection and tracking.
PowerShot V1 – low light videography in a compact device
Focused on its low-light capabilities in a compact package, PowerShot V1 is equipped with a larger 1.4-inch type image sensor, powerful Dual Pixel CMOS AF II for PowerShot, and a embedded 3-stop ND filter – useful for recording video in bright conditions.
The device harnesses the video-centric concept of the PowerShot V10 with the versatility of the PowerShot G7 X Mark III—updated with a major boost in core features. Given its positioning, the PowerShot V1’s ISO range is 2 stops wider than its predecessor (up to 12,800).
RF-S14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ: First RF Lens with Built-in Power Zoom
To complement the lightweight camera bodies, the RF-S314- RF-S14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ is Canon’s first-ever lens with built-in power zooming. This lens provides servo zooming capabilities on the lens itself or through the camera controls – with up to 15 speed values.
Aside from the on-device controls, the lens includes a remote zoom feature via the Camera Connect smartphone app – for precise and standardised controls across multiple scenes. Offering up to 5 stops’ built-in image stabilisation for stills and 5-axis image stabilisation for video, this lens is the perfect companion to the camera’s inbuilt Image Stabilisation (IS).
Thanks to the wide 22.4 mm-equivalent angle of view at its wide end, this lens outperforms conventional kit lenses by creating flattering, natural-looking tighter shots of faces and showcasing products, details, and small subjects up close.
